Dragons are linked to the earth (rivers especially) in both eastern and western belief. The spirit of the dragon is the most primal memory of the land. The virgin sacrifice in western thinking was to permit fertility, as dragons in both eastern and western thinking could deny that to those who failed to respect them. Dragons are also known for having powers of metamorphosis, appearing human, or like a harmless creature until need was otherwise. They have a link to sovereignty in both cultures, and were considered to have power of spirit well beyond human comprehension.
