Eros is Passion

Today we are talking about Eros. In English, we have only the one word, love, but in Greek they have four words for love. We will be talking about only one of these. Eros could be described as passionate love. It does have links to sexuality, but isn’t limited to it. May I ask, what is Eros to you, friends?

Could it go as far as being a fetish or is a fetish not really love? Fetish behaviour is generally ritualistic and therefore limits passion.

More controlled? In the case of fetishes, yes.

Eros is very physical where as other types of love, like maternal love, is deeper.

Eros, I imagine, would be the force of desire?

Eros gives us the desire to choose a mate.

Well, the model I am going to use for Eros tonight runs deeper than physical lust.

If it’s passion, it could be for things or activities as well as people. Yes. Eros is passion, passionate love, as distinct from the appetite of lust. Eros inspires music and art, literature, even mystical rapture.

A muse? Indirectly.

You can lust over what you don’t love like money? You can love what you don’t lust after also.

Eros as the concept I am speaking of this evening runs very deep, and manifests in sexuality only after the person has reached that stage in their life. All that we become as adults lies dormant in who we are as children, and just as a plant takes many of its characteristics from the soil it grows in, so do we take our starting traits from those first forces that urge us to breathe, and express, and survive.

Such as your sexual orientation? Sexual orientation manifests in the process of maturation. But the world itself always moves you to some measure of Eros. One of the personal manifestations of Eros is sensualism, and children are capable of sensualism well before they can formulate a sexual thought let alone have it blossom into a full blown facet of their imagination.

When you breathe just a bit more deeply at the smell of cookies in the oven, that is Eros. When you look just a bit longer at the sight of the rising sun, that is also Eros.

Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
