There is a coherence beyond neural linkage. Something that persists beyond brain damage. That knows an ‘I’ without defining ‘I’. It is the bit which is left when chat stops in meditation. That is the true self.
Some think that spirituality and materialism are exclusive of each other, but if you embrace that you are spiritual then where does your existence arise from? What reason do we have to believe that the physical existence is somehow separate from its physical counterpart? In looking at life (the very physical life that we see around us and feel inside of us) is there really a need to hypothesize some ethereal element that is independent from the flesh and blood itself? Why is the flesh supposedly profane in so many beliefs?
The actions of the body/brain (mind) have been considered viable ways to achieve understanding of the spiritual nature in many traditions. Even meditation is as physical as it is spiritual. Every breath, in a sense, is a mystery all its own. Why do we even breathe? Why is the body so strangely engineered that to live we must breathe, which oxidizes our bodies structure moving us closer to death? If there is no spiritual essence to this physical existence, then why does it exist at all?
Chaos and entropy seem the rule so why did any order arise anywhere? Chaos is the tendency of creation to counter itself. The instability of a star. The tendency of species to fail to thrive, but how did they even arise? Some blame desire, but blaming desire is the thing that gives desire its negative impact.
The possibility that a comet will eradicate life on our planet… It would be difficult to eradicate all life perhaps, and in that case, what took the existence that was here before life as we new it and birthed life? Why would it arise from all of the compounds to structure themselves so?
Perhaps underlying apparent chaos is order we cannot perceive.
