I will start with some simple explanations of psionics before I get into anything more involved. Psionics is the understanding, development, and practice of the powers of the mind. Everything from precognition to empathic healing. If it’s “consciousness only” paranormal phenomenon, it falls into the psionic category.

For all of the mysteries of the mind, the talents some people display have no unifying view behind them. They often seem unexplainable all together. Artists often demonstrate exceptional psionic perception, though usually they don’t develop an expressive talent, which instead goes into art.

It’s like mana? It would be like mana, if I understand the term correctly.

There are a wide variety of these talents all linked together by having the common link of being based primarily in the minds function, and someone might develop one of these talents or a small set. But few people are the “Jack of all Trades” when it comes to psionic functions. I suspect it’s a lot for a normal mind to bear. Too many psychic channels makes it hard to think.

Even in the comic books, don’t the super powers usually just include one psionic? True, actually.

This is why in our Native Hawaiian classifications system for this, there are many, many kahuna, specialists.

Many people take psionic talents more personally than they do a more main stream spiritual practice. They discover their mind can do strange things so they take it personally, and either try to bury it, or they try to push it too far and struggle to develop talents they just don’t naturally have. The kahuna system probably helps those connected to it avoid this.

That is the ideal, but even there we have the lone wolves. Yes. This is why it’s often described as “mind bending”.

Some abuse this ability too. In Latino culture, they say that the Brujo or male witch is crazy. This has nothing to do with Wicca, as their tradition is separate. But in their culture the male with these talents tends to be the lone wolf you spoke of, and for those of exceptional psionic talent there can be a strong anti-social tendency as being around a lot of psychic traffic just aggravates their already over-loaded mind.

To date, psionics isn’t a unified tradition. It has no unified or even whole world view. Some people don’t even know what to call this strange thing their mind does. Is this anyone’s experience?

There are very poor descriptors for it. Hence people throw around the generic ‘psychic’ term. Yes, and even apply it to things it doesn’t fit, like tarot card reading. Divination is a valid practice, it just doesn’t take psychic ability to do. It works on different principles.

Everyone familiar with what animism is? Animism isn’t necessarily a delusion. Animism is also not a term for any one tradition, but is a trait many world traditions have in common. In this series of posts on Psionics, I will go into how it can apply to psionics.

Animism: The doctrine that all natural objects and the universe itself have souls. That is it in the nutshell. Animistic traditions see the world as a community of spirits or souls, and then bases its wisdom on what it has learned of this world of living presences. It is the oldest universal trait of human understanding on this planet.

What do they mean by soul? They mean that if you see anything, if it exists, it exists for the same reason you do. In animism, nothing can exist if it does not have a spirit.
