Every tension you have in your body, every idea you have about your body, is directly linked not only to other people, but to life and the world itself. You will judge food according to your tensions. You will judge choices the same way, as well as people. With the strain and pain of tension, literally nothing is clear. Relaxation is the key to what is perhaps our most primal wisdom.
Tension is the extension of energy outside of balance. An effort at over extension in order to grasp and control what is ultimately outside of our reach. We developed patterns of trying to be and do without returning to the non-being, non-doing state. We even define ourselves by these efforts, rather than by the relaxed center that governs even the flow of our very blood.
“Returning to the non-being, non-doing state”. What does this mean? Excellent question. As children, we could just sit and stare at something. We didn’t have the tensions of trying to analyze or control, or prove anything. We could just sit and be. Now, something would come along and excite us. Our attention would become focused, our blood pressure raise, and we would go do something in response to whatever got our attention. This might last a while, but then we would relax again back into that effortless state.
Relaxation is the tendency of not only our bodies, but our minds, to return to their natural state. This state isn’t actually neutral. Neutrality implies disconnection. When relaxed we are actually the most receptive and responsive we can be. Children do think and analyze, but without tension.
I am not saying relaxation is thoughtless. It’s perhaps much more thought. Filled than tension, tension is a mental stutter, pointlessly recurrent thoughts that keep us locked into a specific behaviour. Children, even when energetic, are quiet within. They don’t have inner conflict unless taught.
Tension is due to the urge to control? Yes, exactly.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
