During the renaissance, there was a radical backlash against instituted knowledge. What was considered common sense was passionately thrown out the window.
Like science? Indeed, but in the renaissance, science was called natural philosophy. It was simply the belief that humanity could learn things by looking at various parts of nature, as well as thinking about the interplay of the whole.
Darwin was considered mad wasn’t he? He was considered quite strange, as was Einstein. What they both had in common was an almost total lack of concern about being seen as scientists. They were too busy doing science. They were children of science.
Now unfortunately, we just jumped from the renaissance to a sort of gothic materialism. They called this gothic materialism “the age of reason”, and it’s still a very popular philosophy. It’s spread was a major vector of the death of the mind with the attitude that there was no God, and thus no divinely inspired authority, then there could be no values at all. As much as the great minds of the renaissance wanted to flex their intellectual and moral freedom, people seem to love stability more than life itself. Can there be education and stability?
Not true education, no. Indeed, and thus many great minds of Greece were executed by the state, as well as great scientific minds toward the end of the feudal age, and with one change you can have more changes. Blind change is without heart, but most cultures are heartless these days and have been for centuries. This is why I spoke of political leadership.
Sometimes they create the illusion of change to appease people. But it is often just going in circles with new names on things and then they try to tell us we’re learning. Bread and circuses. A new flavour of Coke to make the people think they are being rewarded. Anybody happy because of your shoes? Anyone feel free because of their job?
Certain shoes make me happy temporarily. Certain shoes make you aware that you can change your life, even superficially. This is why people become shop-aholics.
The secret to a life of real education is being your own Demagog. Lead yourself according to your own desires and address your own fears.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
