There is a dark side to may popular attitudes that people deny, and in fact everything we think and do is symbolic. Even with the more “normal” types. Some say suicide is by no means symbolic, but indeed it is. It is usually the playing out of a drama that was full of symbolism. It just ends badly.
Why does this morbid stuff appeal to us so? Are we as sick as people think we are? It is the same reason mortification of the flesh was considered an approach to communion with divinity and purity of soul. It is proven that a pain inducing experience can and often does induce an altered state, and there is a fascination with recalling vicarious experiences that you might have had yourself. For some there is even an erotic response. The whole death wish triggering libido thing that happens much more often than people admit. For those who cut themselves it’s known that the brain releases endorphins when pain is recognised. They are in a sense self medicating. Regrettable it’s also addictive.
The mind studies its processes by manifesting physical events for it to examine. And others can manifest things that impact you. It is a form of communication.
