There is a whole domain of consciousness that has been evolving alongside this that has come to dominate out current world. There is a theory that roughly amounts to the notion that humanity used to have a “bicameral” mind, and that all those encounters with gods and angels and demons were just as real to people as more normal affairs. From one point of view, they lacked the ability to distinguish between the two.
The theory goes that we somehow integrated the two of them later in the evolution of human culture. In my experience, this notion of integration isn’t true. We sublimated one, and its influence arises indirectly, filtered through the weak veneer of socially acceptable consciousness.
The reason they believe that we integrated the other mind, was we seem to have much more expressive personalities and “free will.” The idea of predestination didn’t seem so strange to our ancestors. If anything it was just an assumed fact you would wind up doing what “god” wanted you to, and the voice of god ran all through your community. It was just most clearly vocal in the priests.
We squashed that part of our minds? Not squashed, segregated, like our communities still are really. They have some basis for this in science, as people who have suffered severe damage to the parts of their brain that are associated with “irrationality” often show much decreased personal interest in things or personal volition.
Well, despite our efforts to keep down this part of our mind, perhaps not unlike someone with multiple personality disorder, it’s been living a life of its own and evolving right along with the conscious mind. The subconscious, and the state we call sleep, is not as vacuous as people seem to think it is, nor is the information being processed in that seemingly short amount of time as trivial as people think it is. You even experience altered states that have elements in common with sleep when you are “zoning out”, and since most people are both under great stress and sleep deprived these days, even during micro sleeps throughout the day. This other mind does have language though it uses it in what we would see as a very strange way, and the bits of its communication we “overhear” seem random, but my point is, it’s holding all the cards so to speak. As far as vitality goes, it also embodies all the behavioral laws which science is stumbling in the dark about. They aren’t seeing them because they aren’t reproducing the context in which they would emerge.
Second Life is a kindergarten step in the direction of something that would unlock this part of the human mind, but any step is better than none. The gods were attributed with all sorts of strange and amazing “powers” were they not? The most popular being healing. Does it seem like an actual merger would be beneficial? Evolutionarily positive?
Merger with what? Our “selves”, the core consciousness that does not confine itself to a specific part of our nervous system.
God is not dead, but sleeping, depressed maybe, perhaps even suicidal, but our society, language and science as they stand, serve to block integration, reinforce the condition that lead to the mental split in the first place. Can we really mature with only part of our mind? Would that equip us well to go forward?
I’m reminded of the neuro scientist who had the stroke and spoke after of her ‘other’ self. Unfortunately, she didn’t achieve integration either, not a failure, just an incidental condition.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
