The little ritual, or psychodrama if you will, might seem to have no power or meaning. But as people have often experienced, if you dream about something aggravating at night, your next day may be very much affected. Much of dream and ritual are connected. Some tools are actually focuses to allow dream like imagery to emerge. Like a mirror or a scrying bowl, even the layout of a tarot spread is in a sense a ritual. The reader having a process for engaging their intuition and the sitter helping in it.
What is a scrying bowl? A small matte colored bowl with water and a small amount of ink in it. This was Nostradamus’s method as was Catholic prayer before he sought to scry. His methods and life are well documented.
People still do this today to summon thoughts and meditation? Yes. Hermetic philosophers do.
Have any of you seen the movies “Dune“? There is a scene where the mutant navigator is crossing space in a simulator between one planet and another. It was a sort of microcosm of the spacial distance. In ritual, you seek to reproduce in microcosm what you would seek to influence. So you involve items and imagery related to the event you would seek to have come about, and often say what you would intend and act in that created microcosm.
It’s like wishing? In a sense, but with more focus. It’s more like goal setting and relaxing at the same time. Creating the sense of connection to the achievement. Relaxed ambition, and using non rational modes to engage more of the mind.
You’re saying that you can achieve whatever you strive for in a relaxed ritualistic way? The ritual permits preparation like many forms of eastern meditation. It has been proven that the mind cannot tell the difference between actions vividly imagined and those undertaken. They both create the same patterns in the brain.
Rituals are there, but not always successful. Is that correct? Complications do enter the process of attempting to use ritual. Timing for one matters, and even throwing out any other mystical connections, our states of mind and receptivity do follow a cycle. The intent should be strong. If your heart is not in it then it probably won’t work, like an artist who doesn’t really feel connected to their performance and other people see it also.
Is this basically like the law of attraction? In a sense, on a tactile experiential level. Many people are hands on, so ritual is an excellent way for them to set their intentions.
When I think “ritual”, I think of an ancient mating ritual. Connecting ritual to animal mating rituals isn’t too far off the mark. Animal mating ritual is a very primal form of body language, and it is a statement of intent, to the one approached, that they do not desire to attack. Even for humans who are not ritually inclined, to some degree it’s in our blood or our cellular memory if you prefer.
What if I’m not ritual inclined? Ah, I am not selling ritual here. It’s just one of many possible options.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
