First and perhaps most important, let’s define depression. What is it?
I get horribly depressed.
I get a heavy feeling in my head.
An imbalance that makes you feel unmotivated to do much of anything?
How much of this is connected to health and in particular MS?
Depression is despair about life and has many forms.
About loss too.
Hopelessness, helplessness.
I’ve noticed a heavy feeling that is often not connected to thoughts but clouds them.
A sadness that just never seems to go away.
Depression is also often despair over the state of things and a feeling of helplessness to change them.
There are lots of views of depression, and they are all correct. We all have limits. Our minds, much like our bodies, have a limit to how much stress they can take, and yes, in some cases illness can lead to ongoing depression.
It is big problem with MS, so I get confused sometimes. Is it the MS or is it not? I would assume they were linked anyway, because each will impact the other.
But yes, why do we despair? How do minds break? Do you believe they do?
They can get kind of short circuited. Yes. Your nervous system just isn’t talking between its parts.
A mind can break like anything else if you consider it breaking. Too much stress can warp and distort anything.
No. They don’t break at all. They get very weary. Actually, minds can break much like organs.
I must first clarify that mind is not consciousness. Minds can change and breaking is change, and just as it can break it can also be recovered. Consciousness is the enduring element.
Why our minds break is our thinking requires concepts that we get really emotionally invested in. We come to see our lives as defined by certain emotions and beliefs, and when these are challenged, it causes us a lot of stress. Usually, our thoughts and our perceptions bleed into each other and muddy our actual understanding of our experiences. We can become so used to functioning in one, or a small set, of emotional and thus physical states, that any change in mood or health actually feels like it threatens our identity.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
