Perhaps some clarification of Voodoo thought as it relates to the Bible.

Some of the Voodoo practices that are seen as so sinister have regular precedent in the Old Testament, even in the New Testament and in those books the later church judged as apocryphal. Like the idea of cursing there are references to it in the Old Testament being asked of by priests, even being done without request.

Sacrifice? Animal sacrifice is in the Bible also. A Hoodoo practitioner uses the Bible as their grimoire. This is even part of the reason why we use the word grimoire. Grimoire is a French word meaning roughly “grammar book.”

Was the great white brotherhood Voodoo? There have been many Voodoo brotherhoods, some forming because they had to go underground. Their practices weren’t originally oppressed. They were late to try and stop Voodoo practice because they at first viewed the native beliefs and practices with contempt, saw them as unintelligible more or less, powerless, but they discovered otherwise.

It sounds like Wicca is almost a direct descendant of Voodoo also. Wicca arose in a way very similar to American Voodoo, and has incorporated many of its practices with perhaps good effect.

How interesting that both Judaism and Voodoo both originated from Africa. Well, some would argue that Judaism originated from Mesopotamia, is Semitic, and a subcontinent.

Sumer? The country around Sumer yes, but plenty of evidence suggests that the two regions cross pollinated their belief systems a great deal.

The practice of Christian religious intolerance had its origin in the Roman Empire, as did the concept of the “divine right of kings.” The Roman Empire had zero tolerance for any regional leadership so they either converted the local spiritual leaders to their own hierarchy, or killed them. A facet of the Roman scorched earth policy. So a bit of the “spirit” behind the conflict between Hoodoo Christianity and Orthodox Christianity, anything not of the Roman Church was “savage” and could lead to disobedience and even organized uprising.

Do other pagan religions recognize Voodoo? As far as I know no other pagan faiths are at odds with Voodoo. They would find no real reason to argue with each other and share an absence of a conversion agenda. Hoodoo Christianity just sees the Bible as a description of the world as it is, and they use it practically. Otherwise, other peoples beliefs aren’t really relevant to them so no need to correct anybody.

Emotionally, Voodoo might be more like Rastafarianism than like any other branch of Christianity.
