Awareness to You

We had a question about how to develop awareness. It’s actually a really tricky question. I will ask you, what is awareness to you?

The opposite of navel gazing?

Being attentive to internal state and external surroundings. Perhaps it’s being ‘out of mind’ in that you’re not wrapped up in thinking.

I think it’s like being able to look down and see the height you are at without losing your balance.

Any answer is correct, because awareness as a concrete value doesn’t exist. When people reflect on awareness they refer to any of a variety of things, and if you noticed, at least as far as first impressions go, those can be rather different things. In fact, you answer the awareness question more in a way that reflects your personal values than your concrete experience.

I think it’s like being able to look down and see the height you are at without losing your balance. => You value composure.

The opposite of navel gazing? => You value present mindedness.

Being attentive to internal state and external surroundings. => You value your sense of center.

And the range of answers is in theory limitless. Why is that? We know how to develop our technology more or less, but what is this awareness that people seek to develop?

A richer experience of life?

Succeeding at things?

Both valid responses.

Understanding, knowledge. Are those the same thing? At times, not always.

Is development anything other than progress?

It depends on your goals. Having goals itself implies seeking progress. How do we know when we are making progress in developing awareness?

We are aware of our progress? In regard to a goal? How do we find a goal for our awareness?

Sudden insights? More things make sense? Is there any meaning to life beyond progress? Yes. How so?

It can simply be enjoyed. What enables that?

Awareness. Progress? Both correct

It’s just a cycle. A song with no ending. Ah yes, indeed it is, like circulation or respiration.

Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
