Why I Am Dysfunctional Today: Denial is misunderstood. We think of it as if people actively and voluntarily resist truths that are otherwise readily available to them for understanding. This isn’t how reality or the human mind works, or can even work. Reality imposes constraints… no constraints, no reality.
We, as young people, start out with mostly an undifferentiated perception of the world. Over time, we accrue experiences that, though we normally think of them as additive, actually divide up and pair down our perceptual sensitivity to the probable realities around us. The only reality anyone actually embraces, or even can embrace, is not so much a product of the world as it is, as much as it is a psychic footprint of the pruning process that is life experience, and how that has come to impose constraints on our daily thinking and behaviour.
To insist, that someone not deny the so called facts, is to commit an act of psycho-social violence against that individual. If that person must be persuaded to accept something more than they already do, the best practice is to start with some premise, already held by them, that would permit the reality of the new idea, and see where the conversation goes from there.
That‘s my dysfunctional self. What’s yours?
