Why would anyone try to practice magick?
To exert control over events, the same reason people pray. Yet the structure of the practice is different. It would seem that structure would be largely if not completely meaningless, yet we do relate to one differently than the other. Why is that?
Structure makes it seem more predictable, less scary. And yet nobody seems to avoid the big scary real world unless of course they lose their minds. And even in that case, their experience in that state of abandoned consciousness is still shaped by those who have not likewise entered that state.
A kid needs to feel a burn to know what hot feels like, so they will avoid it in future. Yes, the burn, feeling the burn. That is the essence of real magick. In fact, nothing is indeed fated, yet likewise nothing is accidental either. Nothing in reality is incoherent.
Real magick is a system of observations, actions, and practices based not on actual physical things. Not on solid objects, but on the little lattices of probability, cause and effect, and it works with the assumption that with the right cause being initiated you can be confident of the desired effect. Where it differs from science is it does not attempt a part by part analysis of the relationship between things, rather than being heuristic and breaking everything down into parts, and saying that everything works in a set way.
I read a book where the Fates used computational DNA to calculate probabilities. Yes, that’s the reason we have bodies. Why we have these forms and these weird patterns of genetics.
Interesting, probability calculators. Yes. Your body is a big calculator, computer, simulator.
In magick, you look at what could be called quantum systems. Coincidence, in a sense, in that they state that things occur in whole patterns, and that these patterns consistently reproduce themselves. But these patterns can be caused by any portion of the pattern in magickal thinking, simple magickal thought.
It’s like a set of dominos where tipping any one of them will cause the whole chain. Yes, that’s magick in the nut shell.
I picture a kaleidoscope. It is a good metaphor. One that you can spin yourself and stop where you want it. Oh, indeed. Very good. Yet each time you see the same pattern, you see different aspects of it so it’s not really the same each time. This is why they say there is a fine line between genius and insanity. The sane person keeps doing the same thing and expecting a different result. The genius keeps getting the same results and seeing a different thing.
I’m a genius. I can believe you are, but can you? Not really. We all can be.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
