Is there a paradoxical circumstance here? Culture which enables us to “adapt” actually reduces our adaptive capacities? Exactly. The corrective channel is not gone from the human mind, from human experience, but it is more and more vehemently disdained. The stress, this channel in our minds is experiencing, is leading to more and more wide spread use of psychedelics, both chemicals and technologies. We are seeking passionately to diminish the very faculties that we enshrine and advocate in preference to the information I am talking about. Be rational but get high as much as you possibly can, but don’t you dare talk about it. Just get your broken mind back to work. Shut up and push until you break down and have to get high again. It doesn’t matter what you get high on. This is why the term addiction has come to be used to describe almost every human pursuit, even in uncommon cases work itself. The memetic poison has a simple root code in our language and brain function.
So, perhaps “addiction” should be more carefully and accurately defined. Because there really IS such a thing as addiction, after all. Indeed, it should be more carefully defined, but we also need to work around our need for definition as well.
Remember I spoke of our language being composed of two elements? Our brain has two information channels, the lexical, descriptive and mathematical, and structured analysis seems more and more universal as they explore every form of life on this planet, including humans. The other channel is the expressive, and in this channel humans have gone almost completely blind. Human music is largely dead. Human story telling is formulaic and seriously in danger of disappearing all together. Our teaching methods have been ignoring the fundamental nature of the human brain for so long, turning a blind eye to what is actually its heart, its primary mode of function, that we have come very close to almost completely lobotomizing ourselves, thus all the talk of how the internet is changing our brains.
Deductive (lexical, mathematical) and expressive/inductive (experiential story-telling)? Yes. You understand very well.
The expressive channel is universal. It’s present in bioelectrical signalling as sensed by the shark and the knife fish and just about everything under the sea, and it’s also universal above the water also. In human thinking it is expressed in the non rational, visceral and emotional patterns of behaviour, and as much as materialistic thinking insists otherwise, is coherent. They just aren’t putting their own observed facts together. The expressive body of information does express itself in human experience as perceptual metaphor and is what lead to the observable laws of human magical thinking which are also themselves universal. All those laws I have been talking about are part of the expressive network, and they also have predictive value even if they don’t yield themselves to our current crude mathematics. They have observed another geometric figure in physics observations, one that arises when you track one point in a circle as it rotates along the path of another circle. This new figure looks even more like the flower of life diagram than the original geometric figure did.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
