Our world has three faces. A dreamy heaven where wishes are fulfilled. A nightmarish hell where guilt is punished and fear is rewarded with its expectations, and the bright and potentially blinding “real world.” Can you have the real world as we know it without the other two?
What would happen if humans had no dreams?
We’d go insane? We would just go extinct. We couldn’t survive long enough to go insane.
Schizophrenic? Actually, the problem with schizophrenics is they have poor control over their focus. They have impaired ability to shift, sift and filter through these various facets of the world, and well, they are only armed with the same knowledge a normal waking world person is. So for them, they are totally at a loss for what to do when the cockroaches announce they want to eat the persons brain. That is what is called a paranoid schizophrenic. It’s not a personality disorder. Their behavior is quite natural if what they thought they were experiencing is true.
Do you think focusing just on the metaphysical and ignoring the physical can lead to delusion? Yes, because we can delude ourselves about physical things we see and hear as well. Anything you refuse to reality check yourself on can lead to delusion. It doesn’t have to just walk like a duck or just talk like a duck. It has to express the whole set of behaviors or traits, or it is not a duck. You have to include the whole picture on all levels, but do people do that? It’s easier not to in some ways. They prefer their functional fiction over a more immersive reality.
Those caught up in the metaphysics often delude themselves? Those caught up in physics often delude themselves as well. This is what leads to things like dear Mr. Skinner sending his daughter to the psyche ward because he had to prove his behaviorist theories were true. Nightmarish, huh?
If we rid ourselves of the delusions and see the whole picture would we be rid of nightmares? Actually no, but your experience of the nightmare real would change.
Would it be less frightening? Yes, less dramatic.
Should we examine our nightmare images to know what we are ignoring in the big picture? Yes, in part. Actually, any shadowed image does that. Sometimes an obscured image gives us pleasure as often happens in erotic dreams. So distress is not the only aspect of the nightmare realm.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
