Nature of Resistance

I find that just as in physics, resistance plays a big part in spirituality as well. What we resist isn’t removed by our resistance, and much of orthodox religious teaching seems to extol resistance, denial, asceticism. I suppose they can create a supportive context for spiritual growth, but these days in most cultures there really isn’t any support for that.

I find the more I strive to achieve a goal the more resistance I experience both internally and conversely externally. Do you experience this resistance? Where does the resistance come from? It comes from the idea of striving. That we must struggle. That we are separate from what we hope to “attain”. Flowers don’t strive to grow. Growth is in their nature. It’s in our nature also. It’s human judgement that makes it so convoluted for us.

Even the Bible says that the “word” is written upon the human heart. The greater way is reflected in our nature. Yet we are taught that we are not wise. That we have fallen, and it’s implied that we are irredeemable. It makes us good sheep. Tractable to whatever institution that wants control. So we wind up resisting ourselves, and thus not resisting that which compromises that inner truth.

If anything in life is supportive…if anything is something that could be called life’s roots…it’s our nature. It is the inner urge to embrace a child or your lover. To help those dear to you, and it isn’t institutions that teach us this. If anything, they corrupt it with “we are holier than they” thinking. That one culture is chosen.  That one gender is superior. Is it any wonder that we seem like huge bundles of resistance? All chained up inside? I personally despise those chains. Regrettably, that means they hold me still.

We can not resist something without giving it our attention, and our behaviour is always governed by what has our attention. We are the prisoner and the warden of our own gulag, and we cooperate with the world as we are told it is and not the world that birthed us, that supports us still, that came before and will exist after these ideas that tear us apart.

Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
