They have experimental verification that body language is a reliable indicator of people’s general disposition. It’s almost robotic. Where our understanding goes wrong is in misinterpretation. But say, untrustworthiness results in touching the hands and face compulsively, crossing the arms and leaning away from the person they are interacting with. These patterns of body language are the same “character” for every human being.
Our brains cannot track a great many personality profiles. This is why we generalize in understanding and dealing with others, and we all use the body language “characters” sort of like an alphabet. We speak in it as well, more or less fluently as individuals go.
The stereotypical image of a schemer is someone rubbing their hands together and leaning back in their chair. I also ponder shifting eyes.
So although you literally have never directly perceived another human being, not in an objective sense, you do tap into something that is just as real even without having an outward physical basis.
Now why are people so reactionary? The answer is simple. They are emotionally invested in being unimaginative. People are heavily invested in being “realistic.” Our instincts motivate us to keep tabs on that. Our brain has a reflex that powers down our senses while we think and plan, and powers down our thinking while we are busily searching the environment, because memory and planning do take up that much of our brains resources. We do really need it to be that way.
Are the brain’s resources limited, then, as those of a computer are (the hardware, I mean)? The brains resources are limited, if you are speaking of individuals brains. But brains don’t operate independently. Every part of our brain is wired to maximize our ability to plug in “socially”, and we are not the only species that works that way. Pretty much all mammals do.
Makes high school hell for some and perfect for others. Hell for most I would think. Hormones, “It’s a hell of a drug.”
There are some who are so anxious about being realistic and “normal”, they will have anxiety attacks when things diverge very far from that, so “sanity” taken too far is in fact also a mental illness.
But yes back to that fine line, transliminality… We think that our idle trains of thought have no real impact on who we are or how we behave. This is very far from the truth, and we don’t actively or responsibly exploit that truth for the most part. Every favorite fantasy rewrites a portion of your “connectome” as they call it, and when you dream, those patterns set up during your conscious thought during the “waking” part of the day, get communicated down to the primal mind. Your chronic self-talk, becomes physical commands to the body. Your regular visual images get mirrored in the bodies electrochemical signals.
And vice versa? Yes, the reverse is also true.
My point is, we have no ability to perceive an “absolute” reality.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
