Order and Flow

Perhaps we should get down to the magickal practice?

The purpose of any magick working is not to literally cause change with our actions themselves. They seem to lack this power, and superficially this is true. Why we engage in any working of magick is to focus the mind. We become the things we do and say, and what we are is how we behave, how we perceive, and how we organize our energy on any level.

The reason we would use a cord to work knot magick is the same reason our ancestors used cords to record counts of things, and even later to record words. The cord, like the rune-stave or the papyrus scroll, allows us to organize our states of being in steps, and consciously associate them with each other. This creates a sense of continuity, and makes us aware of the greater whole of our working. This is why they use rosaries and malas for example. Eventually, the individuals ideas and symbols blend into a whole in our conscious and subconscious minds.

We can intuit things that our diversionary thinking and speech do not enable us to express, but gestures, simple benchmarks, and something concrete to see and touch, serve to remind us of those notions. This is why people, for a time, tied knots around their finger, and why people sometimes still cross their fingers today.

So we make knots in a cord to help us maintain order and flow in our minds? Yes, and also to set up a sense of the order we would see emerge in the world around us.

I need to get myself a knot amulet. Get or make. It might be better to make it.

I might do that for a necklace making art project with my God kids. Excellent, it should be done at a clam meditative pace. The same as prayer might be.

Great thing about it, parents are Christians, so It would be great to leave these symbols, she is unaware of, around the place. Ah, indeed.

Knot work is always either a gathering, or a binding. In the case of prayer work or blessed amulets, it’s a gathering of spiritually supportive energy, and you would use symbols and materials that also connected with the energy you sought to call to you. In the case of binding knot-work, you seek to restrict the behaviour or working of hurtful forces. The knots in this case don’t seek to destroy what you can’t really destroy anyway, but they acknowledge the place of these negative and undesirable things, and urge them to keep their place.

Like the killer who puts the teeth of their kill around their neck? Potentially, in an extreme case. Some tribal war fetishes were like that, but a Christian rosary would be a binding symbol. Seeking to keep the devil and the temptations of sin in their place. In fact, chanting is making a knot with your words, repeating to make sure the spirit of the chant carried forth into the world around you. You are making a circle or knot with the repetition.

Is the chant a gathering? Generally chants are indeed gathering. We can throw a little science in here if you’re interested.

But it can be both based on the intention? And indeed, both purposes are based on intention.

Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
