The Occult

Do we see all there is to see in our world at any given moment? Why not?

It’s beyond the scope of the human brain in the state of normal consciousness. Indeed, it is. In the total spectrum of life, are our choices necessarily the best informed?

They are as best informed as they are able to be in the given moment. So, since that part of the world we don’t see doesn’t go away, what could and maybe should it be called?

Shadow. Out of sight is out of mind.

The occult? That is an appropriate word used in its original sense, and a good idea to run with.

Occult. It’s a scary word. All sorts of thoughts and suspicions have run along with it in the public mind that we call the “real world”, but does it make sense to frighten ourselves with the unavoidable? For everything you see, there is a huge realm of experience that you do not take in.

If you are watching TV, you aren’t watching a movie in the local theatre. If you are reading a book, you aren’t watching the clouds roll by. But what about inner perception, does it include everything? Does your self awareness tell you everything about who and how you are at all times?

It doesn’t, because it can’t. It has its purpose and can serve it well if we remain aware of its limitations. But that area of limitation in the inner awareness is what psychologists call the shadow, and this limitation is not limited to one person or a small set of persons. At any given time, this “unseen” part of any persons mind is interacting with the world as much, if not more, than their “waking” consciousness. This unspoken dialogue, and this unseen self, has it’s own view of the world. How it is and who you are, and it notices those things that are like itself. This is why we project our negativity onto others, and we can point out factual details about why that projection really reflects the truth. To some degree it does, but we don’t control this force in our lives, do we? People can “push our buttons”, but why is this? Are we lacking free will?

We’re being nudged to look at something in ourselves that we don’t want to. Yes. A modern philosopher said that we should be careful as we look into the darkness, because the darkness also looks into us. It’s also been said that we must be wary when we fight monsters lest we become one.

Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
