Why do we do anything at all?
We do things to feel good? Yes. We live in a living world, and the ways of our world lead to changes in our world, changes in body and mind. It’s inescapable. But I must ask, would you want to escape it if you could?
No, variety is the spice of life.
I would get bored without escape.
The companion process in our lives that has always interacted with art is law. It always has impacted art and it always will. What do you perceive to be the relationship between art and law?
An order. Art without some kind of order is a mess.
Mess is a broad term. What is mess for one could be art for another. My messy room is an art gallery. In a sense that’s true, but not completely. There is a degree of mess that defies any sense of art, but there is art in chaos also.
Art says we can. Law says we must, and they both interact with the same facet of life. We all experience a physical life. What exactly that means is not absolutely clear. In the case of art, the artist looks at the physical life from the point of view of a personal relationship to the world and the presences in it. A painter paints not the literal depiction of the person posing for them, as this is actually impossible. They paint an image of how they can see that person. The artist sees an object and feels that there must be something more to it, and tries to express that.
The treachery of images. Ah, yes. That same treachery shows up in law, thus the divide along the lines of graven images. Many of the world’s cultures do not have a word for religion. The earliest proponents of law were priests. The barrister didn’t come till much later.
The students of law attempted to derive insight into the same experience of the physical life as the artists did, but their intention was different. They saw that there appeared to be more to the physical world than was immediately obvious, and from that observation attempted to deduce insight into what was necessary to lead a stable and prosperous life.
