What is love, really? Is it an emotion, just a feeling? Is it something to do with chemistry or biology; something about pheromones and animal attraction? Is it a mental state? A deliberate decision made by a reasoning person? Is it spiritual or just mental? A biological quirk, designed to promote procreation or a bad habit that should be dismissed as soon as possible for the race of humans as a whole?
What is love? Can you love a food, a car, a pet, or is it just restricted to other humans? What makes the love you have for your children different than the love you have for your parents, your friends, or your spouse? You have to admit, the love is different. How about the love for humanity as a whole? For individuals? For groups? As a theory or a practice, love can be so different that we even have different words to describe different levels of love.
A crush. Puppy love. Lust. Affection. Friendship. Brotherly love. A mother’s love. Adoration. Desire. Devotion.
No matter what we call it, it seems to be an indefinable feeling. And we are not quite sure what causes it, either. What makes one person more attractive than the next? It is not solely looks, for how many times have you seen a beautiful person and been repulsed by their personality? Or how many times have you talked to a plain person and, as they spoke, become transfixed by their inner beauty?
So, what is love? If we could find a cure for it, or a cause for it, would we change the way it worked? Or are we happy with love? Does it work just the way it needs to, despite our endless searches for more?
That’s another question; can you ever have enough love? True love? Or is real love so pure, so precious, that it is unfathomable to have too much of such a good thing?
What does love mean to you?
