Chaos At Play

I will not be giving a scholarly discussion of chaos. The mathematics would be meaningless to most, and the theoretical ramification pointlessly obtuse. So I will focus more on what it might mean to those with a metaphysical view or practice.

We can see chaos at play every day. It isn’t hard. It’s really just the fact that no matter how deterministic any activity would seem, it always has the potential to twist away from what we would consider a normal path. You follow a cooking recipe to the letter, say, and you had even tried the same dish done by someone else. You even do it exactly the same way, but for you it tastes awful. Anyone ever experience this?

It plays out in a lot of different ways, but it’s all basically for the same reason. It doesn’t matter how clear or systematic something seems. Given a great enough amount of time, or external interference, it will fail to perform in the expected way.

Also, sometimes I’ll take a different tack that I think should be off the path and end up on it. This is similarly mysterious. Oh, yes. Sometimes things go mysteriously right as well.

I will ask you this, friends. Do you actually know how you have succeeded or failed at doing anything, ever? If you have successfully done something, do you really know why you succeeded? I won’t reject that we can have “working models”. They are real and true at least in a virtual sense.

But do you need to know why you succeeded and someone else didn’t? Yes and no. The system is a great mystery, yes, but you can understand the parts you need to.

I find that seeing others failures is a positive orientation for my own path. Taken to an extreme, I would cause a failure. Oh, indeed, and with a grasp of chaos theory you can see something perhaps even deeper. The “failure” isn’t even necessarily about them as a person.

I’m a very orderly person. I like working models, but admit they can fail me at times. They can and inevitably will. The reason why is this. Every method you have for doing anything, functions in an environment that is full of other systems either closely connected or loosely. But they have their own deterministic factors that in time, and with the proper energy, will erode the function of your system.

You may think dinner has nothing to do with your bosses attitude tomorrow at work. You would be surprised. Every moment of your day is a part of all of the energies that make up the presences and activities of your day, and in fact, there is no difference between presence and activity.

Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
