It does get hard to reconcile the fact that good things happen to bad people and vice versa. Good fortune happens to bad people because fortune treats everyone equally.

Bad people can understand the web of fortune, can’t they? Yes. They are able to understand it as well as good people are, and some even make more effort to work with it. Bad people can see the value in people. If anything, they are obsessive about it sometimes. Good people can often fail to see the value in people.

How to understand fortune versus karma? People of poor character have bad luck. The poorer their character the worse their luck. They will routinely be involved in things that have negative consequences. But that doesn’t exclude them from receiving things of value, even managing those at least half well, because even they know that they need support for their intentions. But as with all things, resources given to the wise last longer and are used better than those given to fools, and the wise are those who seek to foster the greatest good.

Strange thing, even those of poor character tend to recognize wisdom, and it’s a matter of long held and often repeated stories that when these bad people come into contact with the wise, and live with that contact for very long. They do not remain unchanged.

Sometimes they despise it. Ah, sometimes they do despise it, and sometimes they find a lesser wisdom that fits where they are at that time as well. To use the mafia as an example, old men in the mafia aren’t given physical work to do. But for the very reason that they have managed to survive in the family, and even grow old, they are given a place of respect. They are consulted on all the family business. This pattern reproduces itself across the entire world.

See the connection between fortune and perception? And how choice can affect fortune even if it doesn’t seem to change luck? I myself am not actually a lucky man. If everything depended on circumstance, my life would be utter hell. Dice rolls are bad. Card draws are bad. But I am indeed a very fortunate man.
