Since I’ve stopped believing in heaven and hell, I don’t fear death so much.
You should believe in heaven and hell, but they are not punishments or rewards. They are domains of order and not destinations for the soul. Like two roads running in the same direction though to different destinations, heaven and hell exist as sounds, as sympathies and relationships in the world around us. You get on the path by what you do. You have to walk the walk, but you navigate by attention, vision.
You don’t get there by being good or bad in your life? Hell might be quite pleasant then.
And the first writers about this were in tune with some of its elements.
They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. It actually is, and there is not a single hell, but many. The road to heaven is likewise paved with good intentions, and there is not one heaven, but many. Like the Chinese illustration of heaven and hell, the difference between those walking their life paths is not circumstance. It’s not intention. It’s focus.
So are you destined for one particular place? Or can you choose where to be? Destiny exists. It doesn’t exist as a script, and it certainly is not set in stone. It is a living tendency. On those paths your mind wanders, along those flows your heart drifts, from this you get your destiny. Two strands, one structure. As it is hard to change your mind and your feelings, destiny can seem virtually impossible to change, but it only appears that way.
Destiny is moldable clay and you get to pick the colours to paint it with. Moldable, yes. Very stiff, stubborn, but yes, moldable.
There is a third element. Just as the reapers serve to abate excess noise, deplete harmful energy, the third element of your soul predates your body and mind as you are experiencing them now.
Your soul is the nexus of all your relationships, the lynch-pin of your entire being. Not an object, not a singular energy, but the locus of all such forces, a singularity, gathering together and organizing everything around you and within you. It is not formless. Just as a quasar has a regular pattern of pulses, so does your soul create a regular wave or organizing energy that fills the world around you.
The reason people generally are not in conscious contact with their soul, not aware of it directly or deliberately using it like they might their mind or body, is when you encounter it, it always seems like your death. Death come to take you. Fearful.
It doesn’t take you. You were never here. It doesn’t place you where you are. You were never absent. This is perhaps the first and most important thing to learn about fate.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
