People look at the natural world, the plants and animals, and describe their ways as base, crass, even brutal. They think that art and truth and other aspects of beauty are somehow foreign to the natural world.

We have these potentials within us because they stem from a potential that already existed in the world, just like life giving minerals are already in the soil. The highest and most noble love is rooted in the passions. Why it seems otherwise is an error of perception rather than the literal truth. The joy of life is a gift we are all blessed with from day one.

Men generally have a poor grasp of Eros. Eros comes most directly and powerfully to Psyche. Psyche was a woman. Men have any sensitivity to Eros more or less lessened or conditioned out of them as they mature. Ever notice that statement “I’m a lover, not a fighter” makes most men snort with contempt?

Yet for Eros to reach full bloom, as they say, it needs a companion presence. The thing that creates the split between male and female psyches is the same thing that neuters both and limits their potential. The split between the archetype of lover and fighter is damaging, don’t you think? But this affects women also. The part of the brain responsible for handling feelings of love, also handles feelings of aggression, and people try to nurture one and not the other. This is not how the brain works. Suppress one and you suppress the other.

One woman grew up in a family that had a strict policy of avoiding fighting. They’re also not very affectionate. She was amazed at how another family was affectionate and demonstrative and they hate each other. Of course I have seen worse, lying thieving and backstabbing are virtues for some. This is what they do when they are getting along.

In an odd way I think a pick pocketing family is kind of cute. And the motivation to do so can be innocent, but we aren’t talking about peoples vices today. We are talking about passions…
