Sense of Place

The topic is sense of place and I don’t mean societal role but more of how where you are is a part of who you are, or rather who you see yourself to be. A lot of what you think as true of you applies also to what you think is true of where you live, or perhaps who you live with, or what you have. When they say no man is an island, it’s a little more literal than just a metaphor for human society. It is more of a symbol of the human mind, of human thought. When I move from place to place; how I orient, how I think about what I’m supposed to do, my awareness of who’s around me and maybe a sense of where I’m going from here, has changed.

Yet when we think of ourselves, so often we try to exclude any information about where we are, and honestly what is left is often almost nonsensical and is excused away as just sort of mysterious. All mysteries reveal themselves to the still mind, but for mind to be still you must be still in space. People think much on sense of place. When you ask ‘where am I?’ how much of that is really who am I in this context? When at work how you see yourself can often be very different than how you see yourself at home.

The world and self are a co arising phenomenon. Ego exists only because we exist in a world, but we have to acknowledge the ego is just an idea, and see that the idea is indeed subject to change. Thus sense of place can mean the physical space you are in. It can mean the sense of progress you have in your life. It can mean your sense of orientation toward life or your attitude.

Metaphor is so easy to come by, you needn’t look far. Where are you now? What are you doing? Are you really the first ever to do it? What is this action that you do and why was it done before? Are you really removed from the persons who did it before you? Are those who will do it after separate from you? Where is the you in all this doing? Do these questions make sense?

There is a phenomenon spoken of in eastern mysticism, the akashic record, the world memory. The akashic record isn’t as strange as people think it maybe. In science, they speak of it as the twelfth monkey phenomenon. A lot of what we do now as a societal habit started with just one person and now we all do it, and most don’t even really think of why. In the twelfth monkey phenomenon, monkey populations, even those separate and with no actual contact, will begin developing a new behaviour. Even without any contact the behaviour can seem to co arise. The monkeys can all sort of “think from the same place”. That is the akashic record. It isn’t just memory. The akashic record is a collective spiritual memory. It’s also the source of the karma cause and effect chain. It could also be explained with ‘necessity is the mother of invention’. It could even be called “brahma”, the all encompassing spirit.

We move as individuals, but individual movements are part of a greater whole and we all feel the greater movement. Or can, when we sit and meditate. Have you experienced this my friends?

Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
