Are you familiar with the Marquis Desade? On the surface, his philosophical insights were valid were they not? He basically believed that you didn’t see someone’s true character until you witnessed them in hardship or suffering. The reason being that unless they were put under this stress, they would instead bury themselves in any of a countless variety of rationalizations, delusions of who they are and why they do what they do.
He of course came to adopt a nihilistic view of life over time. He believed that because it took pain and fear to reveal peoples true self, that there wasn’t any substance to those things we believe to have value. He saw truth and beauty as ultimately empty. He stopped short in my view. What are your thoughts my friends?
I think someone should have helped him achieve truth himself. They did. He didn’t die of natural causes.
I don’t think it has to be a traumatic situation either. It could be a DIY project you do together or taking a long car journey. Not traumatic no, but perhaps apocalyptic.
He failed to really understand his own insight because he had an addiction to the pleasures of the senses. He was a pretty hard core hedonist so that is why he came to see truth and beauty as empty. Because he didn’t see the ultimate apocalypse, the first and foremost pain, the greatest fear, and this is simply that nothing is what it seems, nothing is permanent. People want things to change. They want personally to change, but they fear everything having to do with change perhaps because change happens on the level of the unseen.
Do you experience any pain in the realization that you don’t know what will happen tomorrow? No fear? No fear in realizing that anything you are experiencing now will pass the same way all those fond things you remember happening passed out of being? Are you enjoying what is happening right now, or busy being afraid that it won’t last?
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
