I think angels in general are scary, because as I understand it they don’t have free will? That sounds dangerous to me. Their will is taken up by their innate power. They are the literal avatars or incarnations of the workings of the universe itself.
Like being in the military, you have to follow orders. Very good parallel.
Exactly how the concept of angelic rebellion entered Jewish and later Muslim and Christian lore is not exactly clear. They were seen originally as emanations of the supreme being, much the same as in the Zoroastrian model but without the dualism. So in all likelihood and perhaps also the cause for the conflict between the Persians and Rome, the concept of the angelic rebellion originated with the Zoroastrian faith.
Rome couldn’t tolerate anything that questioned the authority of what became the state religion which was Catholic Christianity. It’s even what the word Catholic means, “universal.” So effectively, there would be no separation between angelic lore and what we call physics today, and seeming to be entangled with an intelligently persistent hardship was likely viewed as struggling with an angel.
Is that anything to do with how the term Anglican or anglo came about? Ah, the angel people of the region that would become England, Anglo saxophones. That is where Anglo and Anglican come from, though there may very well be mythic connections as well. It would certainly explain the aggressiveness.
There is a theory that could very likely explain angelic visions. The bicameral mind and it hasn’t been refuted fully to my knowledge. The theory behind the bicameral mind model goes like this. Within human history, the neocortex may have not been integrated. They did have a concept called the “divine right of kings”, so just as it has been established for a fact that the processes that we experience as dream do indeed go on while we wake, in our history they may also have been impinging on human consciousness in the form of waking dreams.
So a vision is a dream in the other half of your head? Yes, and something that they likely could experience while awake, similar to the hallucinations still experienced by schizophrenics today which are often of a religious nature. So this gives rise to questions about human nature, and to what degree it can stand a chance of corresponding to whatever objective reality there may be. Angels were often inclined to do all the things we do impulsively today, demanding placation in the form of sacrificial food offerings or ritual sex, things like that.
The same phenomenon would have been manifesting in the cultures around the Jews as well as with the Jews themselves. There is evidence that suggests even the Talmud was the product of not one tradition but three. Three originally different cultures which might explain strange offshoots like the Yezidi people who have yet another view about angels and their relationship to the creator and the ways of the world.
What is their view? That a being known as Malek Taus is the rightful ruler of earth, and that the creator being has no direct interest in the earth at all, and accepts all souls equally when they pass into the afterlife. Perhaps being more akin to Zoroastrianism in that regard.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
