Wizards had an idea of archetypes? They did indeed. These were what inspired the ancient pictographs, runes and things like that. They used what may have been a stronger trait of people back then, but I think it still applies even today. Anyone familiar with the bicameral mind model?
It’s been proven that both hemispheres of your brain are conscious, and they are capable of operating independently of each other.
Split personality? Yes. Everyone has some degree of split personality, everyone. The difference is just a matter of degree. Wizards understood that when they were talking to anyone, they were talking to both that person who seemed conscious of them, and their “daemon”, a familiar spirit thought to guide and influence everybody throughout life. They could call this spirit to respond even if the conscious listener might not want this to happen, and the activity of this facet of the human being could change their conscious perception, even behaviour. It might seem very much like possession as we think of it today. The right hemisphere of the brain has pretty much an equal copy of all your memories, all your knowledge and skills, even some you may have picked up unknowingly. What it doesn’t have is language.
The daemon possessing you isn’t from an external source? Correct. This other intelligence is inborn.
Pictures. Yes. It can speak in pictures or visions, as they used to call them. This was one of the means of a wizard creating illusions. You don’t even have to go into a trance really. Whenever you do something on autopilot, it’s this part of your mind taking over while your so called conscious mind thinks about other things.
Sometimes we are awed by a picture or event and we are left “speechless.” Is it the part without language that is impacted? Yes, and is why we can seem to act out of character, as they say. We think that we don’t want to behave a certain way, but the other part of our mind wants to do so very badly. So we hall off a yell at someone when we feel we would have preferred to reason with them, things like that. It has very strong emotions.
Now the wizard was capable of turning their own familiar to their service, because that other part of our mind is just as subject to being enchanted as our conscious mind is. So they would display abilities like walking over hot coals without being burned, weathering intensely cold weather without ill effects, and seemingly superhuman feats of strength as well as what looked like a veritable immunity to diseases that not only seriously troubled “normal” people, but even killed them.
Like some Buddhist monks seem to do. Yes.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
