How do you find your place on the shamans medicine wheel? Observation of behaviour and affinities with elements and animals? Yes. I will go there if you are ready friends.
Ultimately, you find your place on the medicine wheel because you will yearn for home. You will naturally gravitate to your spiritual origin place. It’s sort of like craving a food. When you get to that place on the medicine wheel, you will feel satisfied, and just like a food craving, for some people the process is more complicated than others.
Comfort zone? Power zone. You won’t necessarily feel at ease, but you will feel a sense of orientation and clarity. You will be like the fish put back in the water. That is where a shaman could help.
For those whose path to their place on the medicine wheel seemed muddled and uncertain, the shaman, in their knowledge of the world and the spirit world, could look at the big picture for you. To go back to the food metaphor, if your browsing seems erratic, the shaman from their knowledge of the wider world could often see what your behavior was like and where it fit. Like the racoon that will try a bit of many kinds of food, but never willingly shows itself while it’s scrounging. The shaman could hunt this secretive totem out for you.
The way we could do the same today would be to look at other people’s reactions to us. No matter how much we say we are a wolf, if everyone reacts to us like we are a sheep, we are more likely a sheep. When people aren’t paying attention, they actually have good instincts. When they aren’t projecting onto you, they will instead treat you like a duck if you walk and talk like a duck. Nature didn’t really yank our gifts, we just stopped using them.
A man called someone the wise owl. He is an owl, even to the point of remaining quiet sometimes when a screech would better serve.
So if someone gives me a painting of a donkey… If they give you a painting of a donkey, it’s possible you are a donkey. But in South American tradition the donkey was a powerful totem, king of the mountain. It could stand its ground and not budge, even make you move instead, but it’s only the intuitive recognition that matters. People who meet me in person instinctively treat me like one of the animals you hear making night noises. They aren’t automatically terrified, but there is a non-recognition, a “What was that?” response. I do have an intensity of focus and expression, and some serious differences in natural response and perceptual focus.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
