I know I’m searching for something. Something so undefined that it can only be seen by the eyes of the blind. A Billy Joel song lyric but also related to tonight’s topic, the law of contagion.

Human beings generally perceive themselves to see the world as a whole. Even neuroscience now says that this is in fact not true, but what would that mean to our subjective experience?

It would mirror our preferences? Well, prejudices, perhaps to use a more general category, be they positive or negative.

The smarter you are, the more you realize you don’t know.

Your short term or working memory can create a sort of snapshot of any immediate situation. You can note and temporarily track little details of your environment. The circumstances affecting you at the time and the people you are with. But when this moment passes your mind will drop all this information. It won’t retain it because your instincts won’t register it as important enough or “real” enough to matter long term.

It’s always weird when someone tells me something they claim I said, but I don’t remember saying it. And odds are you didn’t say it, but likewise odds are you didn’t even say what you yourself believe you said. It’s of course possible to extrapolate what you most likely said, because your behaviour works like your memory does. You actually only have a short list of natural responses, and mostly you don’t go beyond these.
