How You Feel About Yourself

What is self-esteem?

Feeling good about yourself.

Belief in oneself.

Other thoughts?

How we regard our self.

Is it a popular idea for most people? In my experience, people tend to disdain the notion to one degree or another. What about you?

People like to be humble. Or at least claim it.

So no matter how anyone thinks about self-esteem, we all experience it. It’s not even an evaluation that we have to make consciously, and self-esteem is not the same as self-image. Self-images can be really grandiose, but self-esteem be really low. Self-image is how you think about yourself. Self-esteem is how you feel about yourself. Natural that these could be different, no?

My wife and I recently attended a Seinfeld performance. Part of his act was to talk about how we really don’t have to do anything other than live and die, and that all the stuff in the middle is made up things we do and pretend are important. What do you think? If this is true, why would we behave like that?

To create our self-image and self-esteem? It does wind up establishing those.

Inherited social instincts? And does have some root in those as well. Humanity from time immemorial has struggled with the meaning of life, having a feeling of sense or orientation in life.

Many creatures show off to get a mate. I guess we do the same. Life is all about mating, let’s face it. Well, recent studies do show that perhaps the biggest part of our psyche is strengthened by our sexual activities, but for human purposes it is more than that, and likely shows up in other species as well. If there was no such thing going on with animal species, why do elephants have funerary behavior?

They must have some idea of meaning to do that. At our core we fear not death or failure of the species, but oblivion, a world void of meaning, and if we sit and idle, how does that make us feel? Can we safely live an idle life?

They have even identified a gene that predicts what time of day you will die, not the specific day, but when during that day you will barring death by disease or accident. So why not just sit and do nothing until our ticket is punched?

What are the determining factors? It relates to your circadian rhythm. Those who sleep well die at a different time of day than those who do not. If I recall, those who sleep poorly die earlier in the day and it’s an inherited trait.

Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
