I have an ambitious topic, so I hope you bear with me. I will start with a question in order to try and steer this topic in a relevant way. What is truth to you, my friends?
The opposite of lies. How would you identify opposition to lies? Proof. What is proof? Facts, corroborating evidence.
Something that stands the test of time.
Truth is what’s happening right at the present moment. Is what appears to be happening always factually what is happening? No.
I will offer my own view of truth. To my view, nothing is self-evident.
Not even life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? As much as our great thinkers and scientists have been trying to get to some stable bedrock of information, everything that would seem to be true is dependent on other things also being true. Nothing is self-evident. No truth can stand alone as any singular evidence of principle, purpose or virtue.
We esteem many things rather highly, or at least we pay lip service to these things culturally, all the while we bend and corrupt the conditions that would be necessary for those stated values to be true. Nothing is true, everybody lies, everything lies. It takes up a position in space and time, and in doing so displaces other possible conditions, bars other possible circumstances and conditions from arising.
You do pay highly if you violate someone’s idea of truth. Losing freedom, or your life, or their friendship. Why do we take it so personally when we hear lies? That is an excellent question. What is a lie? Is anything absolutely untrue with no correspondence at all to reality?
Differing facts or perception then your own? We get upset because it violates our perception?
Maybe it is just that we want to have a clear view of truth. We don’t like not knowing things.
We feel threatened whenever anyone gives any impression of non-acceptance. It’s instinctive and reflexive in us though many intellectually deny it.
Non acceptance of our own view? Yes.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
