Looked at in the spiritual / metaphysical / magical sense, impulses can all be called spirits. They have been depicted in countless ways across human cultures, even showing up in alchemy as abstract principles rather that intelligent agencies. Showing up in early medicine and even in more contemporary models like the Japanese association of personalities with blood types. In my opinion, whatever lets you get a conceptual handle on your behaviour is a valid model as long as it gives the responsibility back to you.
But just as ancient mystics sought to balance out what they saw as absolute and even external forces governing human behaviour, at one time it was believed that human behaviour was more or less dictated by the Gods, ideas of destiny and all that. But the methods consist of creating balance of proper harmony between the impulses. Bringing things into a “divine” order, if you will.
Now regarding impulse balance, we have a pantheon of “Gods” in our minds each fully capable of having its say. But when turned against each other the resulting conflict can tear the host body apart. It starts subtly, but can have really dramatic outcomes over time. But respect shown to each of these forces, and by respect I mean attention and not subservience, we can serve as an intermediary between these forces, a diplomatic go between. When the God of war wants you to smash someone’s face, and the Goddess of love makes you think you should be ignoring this fight in favour of giving attention to your attractive partner, you can find the point between these two powers. If you ignore the influence of aggression then it grows and becomes more generalized. This is why impulses become attached to things that seem to have not a single thing to do with them. When you won’t give a little, the conflict winds up taking a lot. These impulses do have affects on each other. Erotic drives tend to curb aggression, fear curbs lust, etc.
I’ve had that happen. I didn’t address the people who were abusing me, so my anger came out in other places. It’s a case of rendering unto Caesar what is Caesar’s. With the impulse insight, nothing has to get out of control, because you can follow the footsteps of the Gods across your own soul.
Sometimes Caesar needs a fat lip. Indeed, sometimes that is necessary, especially if that fat lip will protect a defenceless innocent.
We need to dance with all the Gods? Exactly. Reminds me of the song “Ballroom Blitz”. All the impulses have legitimate territory in your mind, and they are operating in the way they naturally should, orchestrated more or less smoothly most of the time, but then the man in the back says everyone attack.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
