Everything that happens and exists has this power not by itself, but as a product of cooperative effort. Your body lives because of the cooperation of sun and sky, and earth and water. This applies to everything. Outside of this nothing is possible. But just as in relationships between any two human beings, these cooperative relationships aren’t always healthy. You can create anything, but create without respect and you will include turmoil. Strain and sickness. Problems and more potential for problems.
Let’s take something from Japan that people don’t consider normally. People often scoff at the attitudes of the Japanese toward their ancestral relics, but even their sword-smiths were in a sense priests. They didn’t take the metal. They received it as a divine gift. They didn’t force their will on the metal. They worked with it in a sacred ritual that would impart the blade with a strength that modern science still can’t reproduce.
In Hawaii, kahuna meant both priest and master/doctoral level craftsperson for many disciplines. I like that, and I do strongly feel that it should be the way of all cultures.
They gave it their mana. Yes. Their life.
Which was also the blade’s mana which gave the artisan the mana to mirror its reality. The same for all things, canoe, kapa, fish hook, fish for the day, etc. Yes. Give and you receive in return, because unlike people, the living world is entirely honest, and I am not idealizing. The world doesn’t promise you it will keep you safe. It doesn’t promise you it will feed you, but these things do happen anyway. Why is that?
Connections? Yes. There are some spirits that just don’t like people, and others that like people some times and don’t like them at other times, and there are spirits that are our friends. Food is your friend. Water is your friend. You receive these things because they want to give themselves to you. In Hawaii, our friend has told us that they even have long standing bonds with some of their foods, like taro.
Some of the ties are ancestral aumakua. I am descended from a taro plant. It is in the genealogy among other non human things. Certain stones are ancestral, clouds, minerals, sea life, land life. And the descent from these non-human things makes more sense than people think. The iron in your body didn’t come from your body, neither did the calcium. If what makes us related to our parents is that we received matter from them that made up our body, then we got it from the land also. Our parents ate a potato.
Your thoughts are welcome. Be well friends.
