Category: Profane

The profane is the process or dynamic by which things held sacred tend to fall out of favour. The gravity of the profane has been in our world for a very long time. With the fall of any old ideal or regime, there has almost always been a destructive impulse that leads to the clearing away of the old symbols and works that suggested the old belief system.

Everything is either sacred or profane. Those who orient toward the sacred are seekers of hope. Those who have the wisdom of profanity cannot generally resist the urge to bring an image of the sacred down to earth. With the realization of your own nature, you also come to see your imago, or fetch. For whatever you are you will encounter the spiritual opposite of that, even to the point of evoking it in your own self.

“Art is permitted to survive only if it renounces the right to be different, and integrates itself into the omnipotent realm of the profane.” Theodor W. Adorno (German philosopher, 1903-1969)

“Nowadays the rage for possession has got to such a pitch that there is nothing in the realm of nature, whether sacred or profane, out of which profit cannot be squeezed” Desiderius Erasmus (Dutch Priest, Humanist and Editor of the New Testament, 1469-1536)

    Gravity of the Profane

Punk rockers look better dark but that’s just my opinion. Ah, favour visual appearance keeping with music style? I think a granny would be well suited to do death metal if she had the stamina for it. Ozzie is a grandpa, I think, and he’s still cool. He is. He has gotten mellower in his…

  • Either Sacred or Profane

    Either Sacred or Profane

How long can you keep your eyes fixed to your ideals? How rigidly can you hold to your beliefs? Until life gets a little rough. I don’t know. My beliefs are changing all the time. It’s difficult. Often, beliefs are formulated because there is something we feel we should avoid or abstain from. We define…

  • Congealed Blood

    Congealed Blood

The sacred is the lifeblood of the world. When people of any culture praise whatever vision of divinity they revere, they praise that divinity for the gifts of life itself. “This is my blood… Drink it” would have been enormously offensive to the 1st century Jews because only Jehovah gets to drink blood. Excellent point.…

Finding Your Way on the Path

Now where you personally fall between the extremes of the profane and the sacred can only really be discovered through self-reflection. Any extreme will do the same thing to you as it would to anyone else. It’s void for anyone in any direction if taken too far, but if you visualize the sacred and profane…

  • Wisdom of Profanity

    Wisdom of Profanity

Some will be profane of something they hold sacred, won’t they? The model is in order. Perhaps a description of the one wise in profanity. Those who have found the wisdom in profanity are the barriers of the dead. This is why so many cultures have viewed those who do that literally as innately profane.…

  • Where is your Heart?

    Where is your Heart?

I will share my own orientation if that is desired? I centre in the profane, personally. Of my nature, I see the world as a decaying thing, hopes fail and dreams die. Ideals are profaned and promises broken. All reality seems an encompassing lie, but, that is my good foot. I am aware that I have the…

  • Find A Side

    Find A Side

Perhaps an animal metaphor would serve to help explain the sacred and profane. Which do you feel more, the vulture or the bunny? I feel like the mother rabbit. Ah, then you favour the sacred, if only lightly. Anyone else want to answer? Vulture or rabbit? Rabbit. Sacred. Vulture. I think this is why I don’t…

    World’s Biggest Killer is Stress

I cover a wide range of metaphysical and spiritual topics in these classes. Some range a little into the questionable, but no intent to offend is ever involved. Today, we are talking about swearing. The mind runs constantly, but we don’t consciously direct it for large portions of that time. We tend to dismiss strange…

    Desperate for Control

They have recently identified a reflex in the brain that when stimulated triggers a drive to persist. It’s located in a space roughly between the frontal lobe and the upper part of the amygdala which means it’s directly linked to our conscious thinking and our emotions at the same time, and it’s on a circuit…

  • Swearing is Natural

    Swearing is Natural

Traditionally, there is a difference between swearing and vulgarity, but just a quick back track… They now theorize that swearing reduces sensitivity to pain, because it brings up negative emotion and triggers the fight or flight response which speeds up the heart rate – one thing they detected – as well as dulling pain sensitivity.…

  • Bragging Works

    Bragging Works

So far I have described the nonconstructive side of swearing. Another related behaviour is bragging and these are all part of the same phenomenon. What do you think of bragging? I disliked bragging before it was cool to dislike bragging. I do that to convince the other side that he is wrong. The culture that…

  • Healing Instinct to Swear

    Healing Instinct to Swear

The instinct to swear, the drive to dis-inhibit the heart and instincts from the oppressive filters and projections of the mind, is fundamental, necessary for our well being. Studies have shown that a picture of a guy just holding a guitar is more attractive to women than the same guy without it. And a guy…

  • Practice of Bragging

    Practice of Bragging

So, has everyone heard of priming? This is a scientific practice. By introducing key words or concepts, either deliberately or even subliminally, they can alter how ready your brain circuits are to fire. They can set up specific trains of thought to be more likely to occur. Like if they get you to read off…
