Category: Metaphysics of Science

Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy that focuses specifically on the concepts we use to understand reality itself, rather than what might be the best way to do something. Science was originally classified as a philosophy, in my opinion it still is, but many object to the notion that science is still a philosophy. They point at what they feel is proof that science possesses substance that philosophy doesn’t.

There is a schism between science and metaphysics that I believe would be well served by being bridged rather than having the bridge burned. Would you say that working toward a better and clearer metaphysics is without merit in today’s world?

“It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure.” Albert Einstein

“Science progresses best when observations force us to alter our preconceptions” Vera Rubin

  • Ethics is a Point of View

Ethics is a Point of View

Does one person’s anger really look any different from anyone else’s? No. This is perhaps the reason we so readily describe people as clones or drones. We look at their behaviour in the form of fashion or expressive behaviour, or in how they express their education. Does one educated person really look any different from…

  • Ourselves Projected onto the World

    Ourselves Projected onto the World

So yes, we cannot control our behaviour, but we can control our perceptions. What does this mean really? Well, let’s look at perception. Our first and baseline perception is peace versus disturbance. Everything is ok, or something is wrong, and if something is wrong, then can we usually focus on anything else? Not too easily.…

  • Interact with Your Own Perception

    Interact with Your Own Perception

When we perceive that something is wrong, that perception is always that something is wrong with me. Is it not? Can you perceive something being wrong without personal involvement? Or maybe, the fear that something could become wrong with me. Indeed, and the subconscious mind doesn’t comprehend future deference. Something could be wrong is seen…

  • Dream of God

    Dream of God

Shall we get down to the really way out metaphysics? I am an engineer, an architect maybe. I deal in lies. I sell lies to those who will not see my product. The reason I say this is, every change of people’s point of view is a lie, but it all works with a domain…

  • Thought Takes Shape

    Thought Takes Shape

How do shapes effect us spiritually and psychologically? They make us think. Different shape, different thought. Every thought takes shape in our mind. Can you see a shape and not start organizing your thoughts? When you see a strange object on the ground, does it not take just a moment of your time for your…

  • Human Alteration

    Human Alteration

You look like a Techno-Necro Lord. I need a look like that for when I find myself alone with a thug in a subway station. Oh, indeed. It might discourage any aggression. Have you heard of the RPG Iron Kingdoms? I haven’t, or maybe Steam-punk Lich. Yes, it is basically a Steam-punk Lich. I used…

  • Two Philosophies of Artificial Intelligence

    Two Philosophies of Artificial Intelligence

In order to make artificial anything, there must first have been a natural something that we are imitating. In most schools of thought regarding artificial intelligence, intelligence is either just an incidental byproduct of organic complexity, an empty mechanical process, or intelligence is an emergent quality in sufficiently complex physical systems. These are the two…

  • Information Rich Natural World

    Information Rich Natural World

Any questions before I dive off the deep end? Not yet. So off I go. They have discovered they can engineer DNA in just about whatever way they want. They have even built a nanotech engine that has a single molecule for the turbine. Nature has been combining atoms for a very long time. Science…

  • Tap Into a Domain of Intelligence

Tap Into a Domain of Intelligence

Ray Kurzweil is projecting that in a matter of decades, we will have something the size of a laptop that dwarfs human intelligence thousands of times over. What do you think of that notion? I’m already scared of it. You needn’t be, though not for the reasons Kurzweil suggests in my view. I say don’t…

  • Online Brain

    Online Brain

I watched this program that suggested Einstein was like a receiver for broadcasting alien intelligence. You can study slices of his brain to see the differences to what a normal human brain would be. Anyone with super intelligence has this brain difference. Ah well, I think people overplay the alien part. That term really only…

  • You Are the Intelligence

    You Are the Intelligence

Now shall I bend your mind even further? The intelligence behind the intelligence of your body and brain is you, and you are just as frustrated as the other computer geeks here. You do log off for a while, put the body in sleep mode, which doesn’t shut it down, and you are the intelligence…

  • My Brain

    My Brain

I have made mention of a brain project I have been undertaking. I am leary to talk about it, but my intuition says maybe I should, so I will trust it if you are willing. Well, they have discovered under FMRI that people with autism display what they call low functional connectivity. In a normal…

  • Conflict Between Science and Religion

    Conflict Between Science and Religion

There is a notion held in common these days by many people, that there is somehow a conflict between science and religion. I would acknowledge that currently there is social tension between avowed atheists and members of any religion, even if the religion espouses no real dogma to be opposed to as is the case…

  • Religion as Inspiration for Understanding

    Religion as Inspiration for Understanding

I will ask you friends, do you feel the larger scientific community acts with philosophical integrity? There are some scientific thinkers that do advance the notion that scientific discovery will offer change as regards society and human social ills. It tends to get around to the same idea though. You are an accident of nature,…

  • Science without Guidance is Aimless

    Science without Guidance is Aimless

Would you say the state of science as a social entity is a stable and positive influence in today’s world? Not as a social entity, no. As they say, any scientific advancement can be used for good or ill, so something else must guide that. I think science has improved the quality of living for…

  • Inspired and Motivated by Religion

    Inspired and Motivated by Religion

Let’s take a step back from science… Someone noted that religion gave us something better than the pre-existing barbarity. Lets’ run with that. I personally agree with that in part. Even archaeologically many of the innovations we attribute to advanced society came not from science as many claim today, but were inspired and motivated by…

  • We Are Aimless!?

    We Are Aimless!?

With the rise of industrialism, there was a vested interest in it not for the greater good of mankind, but because of the potential for financial gain and the political instability that could cause, giving those who succeeded a chance at power they never would have previously had. So in order to clear the way…

  • Early Morale Officers

    Early Morale Officers

There is a reason primitive tribes saw the emergence of the shaman. We originally recognized and even shared a vision of an intuitively understood world. People look for someone to guide them. Life is scary. Actually no, not my point at all. People recognized that even their personal experiences were strange. The individual self is…
