Category: Metaphysics of Science

Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy that focuses specifically on the concepts we use to understand reality itself, rather than what might be the best way to do something. Science was originally classified as a philosophy, in my opinion it still is, but many object to the notion that science is still a philosophy. They point at what they feel is proof that science possesses substance that philosophy doesn’t.

There is a schism between science and metaphysics that I believe would be well served by being bridged rather than having the bridge burned. Would you say that working toward a better and clearer metaphysics is without merit in today’s world?

“It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure.” Albert Einstein

“Science progresses best when observations force us to alter our preconceptions” Vera Rubin

  • Your Personal Story

    Your Personal Story

How much of your personal story is about concrete physical experiences? It’s more about subjective so not much on the concrete. How many of our day to day fears are based on concrete things? How much control is exerted over us by concrete presences or potential for direct influence? I’ve been shown how people interact…

  • Meaning Behind the Meaning

    Meaning Behind the Meaning

Should I go further into meaning as it stands now? Or perhaps the meaning behind the meaning? Remember my earlier reference to children seeing everything as an agent? And well, adults do also. They just deny it. It’s actually inescapable. Scientific pretense even collapses under pressure. We understand our world as behaviour. We understand reasons…

  • Outside of Borrowed Meaning

    Outside of Borrowed Meaning

Remember I said earlier that we can’t really invent symbols? It’s all already there. Yes. We are already working from a bedrock of meaning. We just dismiss it as childhood fantasy, but you can’t fully and completely ignore it. You just engage in aggressive reinterpretation. You put people into roles, that you originally assigned to…

  • Empathic Response

    Empathic Response

When I am very confused, depressed, anxious, or otherwise bothered, one sure-fire way to get myself out of that “obsessive thought pattern” is Tonglen. And I view that as a form of “projection.” But it always works to put my concerns about myself out there in the interest of someone else, or many people, who…

  • Gestures

    Gestures

Shall we get down to the base code? Gestures. Every thing, every event, every stimuli, registers as a gesture, a motion, even before we experience emotion about it. The very first sense our bodies develop is touch, and our primary experience of touch is proprioception, our awareness of our bodies, our sense of pain. Even…

  • Feel the Gestures

    Feel the Gestures

Shall we get to practice now? In practice, it’s about gestures and agents. Perhaps the first gesture, and I really think it’s one people neglect to make, is respecting the presence of other agents, respecting that things really are as they are. The second gesture is recognizing the relationships between agents, being open in a fully…

  • Naturalistic Comprehension

    Naturalistic Comprehension

We don’t have to be taught to understand everything we experience. In fact, they have confirmed that some key values are held and displayed even before an infant reaches verbal ability, like cooperation being good and hurtful interference being bad. They don’t have to be taught these things. In my own case, I quickly took…

  • Language Guides Thought

    Language Guides Thought

English speaking cultures notoriously have a spotty sense of direction. How clear would you say the rules of structure are in English language? Very ambiguous. The difference between normal English and the Queens’ English for instance. And there is no difference between how you structure the order of your words and how you structure your…

  • Senses Organized Around Space

    Senses Organized Around Space

So yes, all of our senses organize around our sense of space. Our brains map things metaphorically speaking. Even in my case, as autistics are known for exceptional visual skills, those come in two flavours. A sort of modelling, and a tracking of spatial relationships, order and organization. Can you guess which is mine? Spatial…

  • Sense of Intensity

    Sense of Intensity

An interesting side note regarding emotions… Emotional pain and physical pain use the same systems in the brain, but there is a universal behaviour regarding the two. Emotional pain always registers as more intense than physical pain, even to the point of physical pain being dismissed if both are being experienced simultaneously. Physical pain can…

  • In Front of Us

    In Front of Us

Vision, sight, is in front of us, but we do not see fully. The region of the brain literally responsible for engaging and fully processing the senses is physically in the back of our heads. You supposedly see with the front of your brain which has only one neurological function really. It inhibits the other…

  • Beneath Us

    Beneath Us

Shall we do what’s beneath us, above us, to the left of us, or to the right? Beneath. Beneath us. Time, progress, age, fate. From beneath you it devours. The answer being dust in the wind. This tends to discourage people, but that’s blaming the tools really. Everything beneath us is seen as a means to an…

  • Left and Right of Us

    Left and Right of Us

Shall I explore what’s to the right of us, or the left? Left. This is like choose-your-own-adventure. To the left we have life according to you. We have the epic story of a person who has tried many things to find happiness, to find meaning. Has engaged in every manner of treasure seeking, and has…

  • Work with Being

    Work with Being

What about a woman who wants kids but later in her life, after she is satisfied with her relationship, job etc. Then at that time she should pursue child rearing. But her body is limiting her till the age 35. What does she need to do? Listen to her body?  She should listen to her body…

  • Only Energy

    Only Energy

Some things first. Matter is not matter. It is not particles. It can be measured as discreet particles. It can even behave like particles in the right circumstances, but ultimately there is only energy. Electricity is present in every bit of matter throughout our universe. It’s responsible for giving every material thing we experience its…

  • Four Dimensional World

    Four Dimensional World

Can you explain a bit of the reality of a four dimensional world? Certainly. We perceive things to change linearly, but all of even our physics seems to suggest that such is not the case. There has even been a controversial experiment that they haven’t been able to shoot holes in yet (all the skeptics…

  • How Life Emerged

    How Life Emerged

How this all related to electricity… Well, there was an old model of how life emerged that has been thrown out a while ago. The notion that inert chemicals would spontaneously form the necessary structures and enzymes that would lead to the formation of living cells. The molecules did form but then failed to do…

  • Sing the Body Electric

    Sing the Body Electric

So let us sing the body electric. The process that perpetuates the body, and those fine tuned processes in the universe around us, are not separate. For some reason, science has not yet drawn the connection, but when you consider the processes of the body and brain, you have nothing more or less than a…
